Tuition For Children

Tuition For Children

We recommend that children begin riding lessons around the ages of 5 or 6 years, although there are always exceptions who are ready to start at an earlier age.

Parents can be assured that lessons are carried out by qualified  and experienced Instructors.

As with adults, children begin with a private lesson whether or not they have ridden before. This helps them to get to know their instructor and vice versa. The instructor may then recommend that they continue with private lessons or join a group. Whatever they do it is essential that safety is paramount and it is fun.

In their first lessons they will learn the basics of horse-riding, for example how to mount and dismount, how to hold the reins and how to give the pony the aids which tell him to start and stop. They will spend some time on the lunge during each lesson as this helps them to progress quicker ,particularly when they start  to learn to master the rising trot . Some time later when the child is more confident cantering will be included as will some pole work and small jumps. Children usually join a group once they have started cantering.

Children may only join a group if they are going to ride regularly and then are placed in a group with others of a similar age and ability. The groups are small, with no more than six or seven riders. This enables the instructor to give time to each individual child.

As well as formal lessons there are many other activities that children may join in with, such as Own a Pony Days, Pony Care Mornings, Pony Loans, and of course the very popular Pony Club where they not only ride but learn how to look after their pony.
